Our Local Centres investment fund

Batley, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike and Holmfirth

We’ve been finding out how you feel about visiting, working in or living in your town centre now & listening to ideas for the future.

As part of Our Local Centres investment fund, your ward councillors and Kirklees Council are working together to find out what really matters to you in Batley, Cleckheaton, Heckmondwike and Holmfirth town centres. Almost 1,900 people have already joined in and together you’ve shared 9,346 comments and ideas. Thank you very much for taking part.

The next steps…

Based on what we’ve learned from local people, we’ve now taken the next step and asked more people to help prioritise the ideas, for each town centre. We’ve held results drop-in sessions for each town, where you could find out more about what people said, talk about what we’ve learned and help decide what happens next. We’re sharing what we’ve learned on this website.

Batley – Our town centre

In March 2022, people in Batley helped to prioritise the ideas we have gathered from participants. People took part in an event at Batley Town Hall or completed our questionnaire. What we’ve learned will now support the development of an action plan.

Investing in our local centres

We all want to see our town centres revitalised and to do this we really need to know what people think about them.

Our local centres provide a range of business, cultural, leisure and local retail facilities and are also areas of local growth. Kirklees Council are investing £1.5m in each of these four town centres, as part of Our Local Centres Programme. We are also investing in other ways.

We know that how our towns look and feel is important in attracting people to visit them. We want our towns to be clean, environmentally friendly, and welcoming for children and families.

By taking part, you’re helping to inform the improvements to your town centre, by helping us understand what’s important to you.

To support investment in each of the town centres, the development of a masterplan identifying areas where significant growth and revitalisation can occur will be crucial in ensuring a long-term future which strengthens the demands of new and existing communities.

Our aim is to work in partnership with ward councillors, local communities, businesses, developers, and voluntary groups to inspire and encourage new investment into these towns.

What happens next?

Kirklees Council, local ward councillors and partners will use what we learn to help create an action plan and direct funding and investment where we can, to reflect what people have told us.
