Why we’re doing it

We want to engage with our citizens in a way that you find meaningful and relevant. Citizens have told us that our current approach isn’t helping with this. So we’ll be trying some new things in local places, to find out what works for you.

Our towns, villages and communities are the strength of Kirklees. People who live in these unique places have asked us to do more to recognise this. Our citizens want to have more of a dialogue about what matters in our places, and more of a voice in what happens here.

We know this through the work of the Kirklees Democracy Commission, who heard evidence from people in Kirklees and beyond about our local democracy. In response, the Commission recommended trying out some different approaches to engaging with our citizens. This is what we’re doing now.

We want to make sure that everyone has a stake in the place where they live, work or visit. It’s just one part of our work to grow a stronger local democracy here in Kirklees, from the ground up.
