Why we’re doing it

We want to engage with our citizens in a way that you find meaningful and relevant. Citizens told us that our previous approach wasn’t helping with this. So we have been trying some new things in local places, to find out what works for you.

Our towns, villages and communities are the strength of Kirklees. People who live in these unique places have asked us to do more to recognise this. Our citizens want to have more of a dialogue about what matters in our places, and more of a voice in what happens here.

We know this through the work of the Kirklees Democracy Commission, who heard evidence from people in Kirklees and beyond about our local democracy. In response, the Commission recommended trying out some different approaches to engaging with our citizens. These activities are part of our new approach.

We want to make sure that everyone has a stake in the place where they live, work or visit. It’s just one part of our work to grow a stronger local democracy here in Kirklees, from the ground up.

In October 2021, Kirklees Council and our partners made a strong commitment to supporting active citizens by adopting the Shaped by People shared strategic outcome, as part of our Council Plan. This shared goal, created by our citizens, says that everyone should be able to shape their local place and make a difference in their community.

We make our places what they are.
